Spoon Levels: Critically Low

Hey everyone. I've been falling behind on some things recently, and before I go into why I've faltered I'd like to apologize to you all.

You folks spend your time and hard-earned money on the pretty things I create here at Lucky 13, and I'm sorry there are times when it takes too long to ship out or I don't respond to messages quickly. I want you all to know I appreciate all of your continued support and understanding so much more than words can say.

Secondly, I'd like to apologize for not being as honest about why I've fallen behind as I'd like to have been. It feels weird to talk about my disabilities, but since it's recently heavily impacted my ability to work I think it's time to stop feeling embarrassed for silly reasons.

I've been experiencing chronic joint pain for the last 7 years, since I was 23. I've seen over a dozen doctors and every one of them has said there's "nothing wrong" with me and sent me away to wonder if it was all in my head. I'd spend hours looking for something that explained my seemingly random symptoms, but nothing fit 100%. In January 2017, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, and I began trying to accept that pain is simply a part of my life now. I've talked about this before, and having friends who understand is helpful, but I still wasn't satisfied with the answer so I kept looking.

Earlier this year, I came across another explanation that really made sense. It explained some of my "silly human tricks" I've been doing since I was a child, the weird way I've always sat (until my pain caught up with me), even why I bruise so easily and my scars look different than other peoples'.

I have Ehlers-Danlos.

What that means is that my joints don't know where the hell they're supposed to be hanging out, so they can partially dislocate (called subluxation) or even fully dislocate at any time. Also, my collagen doesn't heal well so my joints wear down faster than they should. This is a really painful thing to experience in one joint, let alone half a dozen across my whole body. On the up-side, my skin is as soft as a baby angel's buns. While my body feels like I'm 200 on the inside, I'll look like I'm in my 20s for decades to come. Silver linings!!

However, the pain on top of anxiety, depression, and bi-polar mood swings can make it a struggle just to want to keep going every day. Some days I just feel like a hopeless and broken human. I've had a lot of those days recently.

Waking up after a restless 6 hours, stuffing myself to the eyeballs with coffee, working in pain all day (and only achieving partial efficiency because of it) before collapsing to start the cycle again the next day has been driving me insane. I'm trying to maintain a better balance of efficient work and rest, and I'm learning.

I can honestly say that getting to "play with glitter" for a living is not something I take for granted, nor is success something I inherently deserve. But I want to continue working hard for it, every day that I can.

Thanks for reading all of this <3

Accio Lacquer, Accio Discount!

As many of you surely know, I (Jess) and Mishka of Accio Lacquer are very good friends and we work together often. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to spend time with her in-person a few weeks ago and it only made our friendship stronger. We've even discussed the possibility of her moving closer to where I am! I can't even fathom how amazing that would be!

However, after Mishka returned home from her vacation she found that her dear kitty, Severus, was very ill from his diabetes. If my cat Sagan is my supervisor, Mishka's cat Severus is her Professor!

Just look at this little dork, how can you not love him the moment you see him??
Picture
The good news is that Severus' vet remains positive about his recovery and the kitty is happy to get all the love Mishka can give him. However, such severe health issues have caused the vet bills to pile up to an unmanageable level.

Mishka has opened up a GoFundMe account to cover Severus' bills to make sure her baby gets the best care possible.
Picture
As someone who has also had some very expensive complications with their beloved feline friend I aim to do everything in my power to help Mishka and Severus stay happy, healthy, and out of deep debt.

While I am recovering from my own financial difficulties due to kitties there isn't much I can do personally, but I do have the power to offer a discount for those who are able to support Mishka and Severus!

I am offering a one-time use code of 10% off for all who donate $5 or more OR 20% off for those who donate $20 or more to Mishka's fund.

If you enjoy reading Accio Lacquer I hope you'll support her in her time of need, even if the most you can do is $1 or spreading the word. Our furry friends are what keep us going when times get hard.
Please enjoy this soothing gif of my own kitty, Sagan, enjoying some love.

Warning: depressing and personal stuff below. If you just want the sale use code FAMILYFIRST to get 20% off everything here.

Hi everyone, since I have so many social media sites it's just easier to write everything out here instead of trying to fit it into 140 characters, but I'll still try to make this brief.

As those of you who follow me on Facebook have likely seen, my grandmother had an accident and has been comatose for about the last week. She was diagnosed as having no brain activity, which was confirmed by a second doctor, and the family has chosen to remove her breathing tube and allow her to pass (or, if by some miracle it happens, to heal. I'm still hoping, but knowing it won't happen) naturally. Right now we're not sure when that will happen as she's been breathing on her own for a day and a half so I'm going to be getting plane tickets and a hotel as soon as she passes, but for now I'm stuck in the horrible limbo of Waiting.

My entire family is in Southern California and I....am not. I'm up here in Portland. And I really need to get home to see my family. So, that means sale time for you! Silver lining, right?? From now until whenever I leave for CA I'm doing a 20% off sale with the code FAMILYFIRST which gives 20% off everything except charity items, so everything listed here. You can add other items to your cart if you like, the coupon just won't apply to them. I also have all Elemental Ward top coats on sale for only $5.

This sale is kind of wibbly wobbly, it currently doesn't have an exact end date; I'll be discontinuing the code 24 hours or so after I get my plane tickets to CA so there will be warning. Thank you to everyone who has sent me kind words and positive thoughts <3

Introducing: Lucky 13 Nail Polish Pendants!

1/6/2014

For the last few months I've been wanting to use Lucky 13 Lacquers to make nail polish pendants and with my recent "vacation" I finally had the time to gather some supplies and make it happen!

Each pendant is handmade with love using Lucky 13 Lacquers, real glass tiles, silver plated trays, and 16" organza ribbon necklaces with a 2" extender. These items are limited edition and may not be available ever again! There was a lot more time involved than I'd anticipated for some of these so these coming back or not will depend on how much interest there is and how heavy my workload is.

Please note: Each polish is made by hand and as such may have minor variation from the image shown.

If you have a specific currently-available Lucky 13 Lacquer that you'd like a pendant made with please shop as usual and add the "Custom 1 color" or "Custom 2 color" item to your cart. When you've completed your order, please email me your preferred color(s). Currently the only available options for custom necklaces are heart-shaped pendants with wine red necklaces.

As an added bonus, if you order a one- or two-polish pendant and a bottle of the polish(es) it's made with you will get a discount! Please first add the pendant to your cart and then add the discounted polish item from the drop-down list into your cart. Do not purchase the discounted polish if you have not also purchased the necklace made with the same polish(es). These would be perfect for Valentine's day gifts, especially Life is Short and You are Hot!

Available designs
  • Heart-shaped rainbow striped using colors from the Sailor Senshi collection with wine red necklace. Not available with discounted polish. This design will almost certainly not be available ever again due to the time and intricacy involved.
  • Heart-shaped Life is Short and You are Hot with wine red necklace. 3 versions of this are available: backed with white (A), backed with black (B), and backed with ruby red (for opacity) (C).
  • Round Stick Them with the Pointy End with red necklace.
  • Square Wibbly Wobbly, Timey Wimey with navy blue necklace.
  • Round A Leaf on the Wind topped with Always with spring green necklace.

Polish Orphanage Grand Opening/Stock Info

1/4/2014

During the Inventory Incident of 2013 (which is what my "vacation" from mid-December through January has been named) I came across quite a few discontinued or shortie polishes that are in need of loving homes. To ensure that every polish finds a new home I have created the Polish Orphanage! Discontinued and flop polishes will live happily together in the Orphanage until they find their new family and new flops/discontinued polishes will continue to be added to the Orphanage as needed.

For the first batch of discontinued Orphans I thought it would be helpful to let you all know how many of each polish and what sizes will be available when Lucky 13 opens back up on the 6th! When the Orphanage opens up please be careful to read the name and the size shown in parentheses. Discontinued Orphans will be the usual price ($6 for 10ml, $8.50 for 15ml) and failed prototypes/incorrect formulations of released colors will be $7 unless otherwise noted).

Updated International Shipping Information

1/3/2014

While USPS has recently made International shipping easier by allowing me to pay for and print International postage from home and schedule home pickups, some countries still are not allowing online postage purchases. Therefore I must brave inclement weather on my motorcycle to make it to the post office which, understandably, I don't wish to do very often! Because of this, shipping costs for some countries (most notably: Russia) will increase slightly in the new year and may have a slightly longer time between ordering and shipping than before. Canada, on the other hand, has slightly lower shipping costs and those costs have been lowered slightly to be more accurate.

Please contact me with any questions before ordering; if your question is asked during a special promotion I will honor it, if possible, if it takes too long to get you an answer.

Also, please remember that I do everything in my power to ensure that packages make it safely through customs but once it's out of my hands, it's out of my hands!

New Year, New Lucky 13!

12/4/2013

When Lucky 13 was born a year and a half ago (wow, my baby is already 18 months!!) I honestly never dreamed it would be more than a small hobby where I'd make gifts for friends and perhaps make a sale or two. I truly never dreamed it would grow into what it is today! I won't get all mushy with you guys (again) but suffice to say I wake up every day thankful that I can do something I love and that I have so many amazing friends because of it.

However, with great growth comes great responsibility. Wait, that's not the right quote, I'm not Spiderman. Whatever! For months Lucky 13's growth was very slow but steady but in the last few months growth has jumped enormously, enough so that my usual business model just doesn't fit Lucky 13 anymore and it's time to change things up. Previously I had so few orders that I could easily mix things on demand and still get orders shipped within 2 to 3 days. I've always wanted to make sure that if there was a color and size someone wanted, they could get it. I most certainly can not do that any more, however.

Let's take Black Friday weekend for example. From Friday 11/29 through Monday 12/2 I received 88 orders totalling 461 bottles. I can't even tell you how much more that is than what I'd anticipated, it's just ridiculous! And with the Lord of the Rings releases in September I received more orders in a single day than I had previously gotten in my best month. These were huge signs that it was time to change how I was doing things.

Even before the Lord of the Rings releases I'd been wanting to switch from mixing on-demand and instead mix stock in bulk and do restocks (you know, like normal indies often do!) but I never found the time where I was both caught up on orders and I had enough free time to begin mixing in bulk. With the Christmas/Yule/winter-y holidays coming up (and my birthday!) I've decided that now is the time to switch over.

So, as much as I loathe doing this, Lucky 13 will not be accepting any orders beginning December 10th (sometime soon after midnight the morning of the 10th, PST as always) until January 5th (again, sometime soon after midnight the morning of). When I come back what's in stock on the site will be what's available and when it's gone it's gone until the next restock. I'll try to keep things stocked as well as I can but it will take some time to get into the swing of things so I hope you'll all bear with me. With this change there should be a much better turnaround time between ordering and shipment.

Additionally, I'll be phasing out shorties in order to further streamline mixing and shipment. I don't anticipate any price changes but I will give ample warning beforehand if things do change.

Because I hate posts without pictures please enjoy this gravity-defying stoat!

As always I'd love to hear your comments, questions, concerns, criticisms, whatever!

Softening the Bad Things Follow-Up

7/30/2013

Those of you who follow my Facebook know that Monday I released Softening the Bad Things. Monday's release had 26 bottles (one was for me, so 25 were for sale) and based upon the response it wasn't nearly enough! So many people tried but were unable to grab a bottle so I'd like your input for the next batch!

The bottles that were available for sale at about 2:32PM PST on Monday and by 2:35 all of them were either sold or held in peoples' carts! Wow!! How amazing is that? It seems that Softening the Bad Things really resonated with a lot of people and caused a lot of discussion about mental illnesses and I'm glad to have been part of that.

And now I'd like to hear from you all about your feelings on Softening the Bad Things' second run. Future batches will have their run # marked on the bottom along with their x-of-y (such as 13 of 26) numbering where as the first run had no such marker.
Regarding the $350 donation to NAMI: I'm in the process of collecting the funds from my fellow bloggers who agreed to match the $25 donation and once those are all in I'll be making the donation. Do you remember everyone who was matching that donation? Here's the list again:

  • InsomniLacq (me!!)
  • Lucky 13 Lacquer (also me!)
  • Accio Lacquer
  • Nails in Real Life
  • The Lazy Laquerista
  • Chronically Fantabulous
  • Michelle B.
